Aquaponics in Your Ears

The Questions Beginners Really Ask

Curious about aquaponics, but don't have time to sit down and work through another course or guide?

Pop in your headphones and let me answer the questions women actually asked me when they were first discovering aquaponics.

Aquaponics in Your Ears is a free five-part audio series covering the basics — what aquaponics is, how much work it takes, what you can grow, what it costs and whether you could actually build and look after a system yourself.

Each episode is short, conversational and designed to fit into real life.

Listen in the car. While you're making dinner. On the school run. In the garden. Or whenever you've got a few minutes and want to learn something new.

You Don't Need to Learn Everything About Aquaponics Yet

When you're completely new to aquaponics, it doesn't take long before people start talking about pH, ammonia, nitrates, filtration, pumps, stocking densities and cycling.

And suddenly something that sounded really interesting can sound incredibly complicated.

But those weren't the first things women asked me when I introduced them to aquaponics.

They wanted to know:

What actually is aquaponics?

Is it hard to look after?

Is it expensive?

What vegetables can I grow?

Could my kids help?

What if I'm not confident using tools?

Is growing food this way actually worth it?

Those are the questions we're starting with.

You can learn the deeper aquaponics stuff later, if you decide you want to.

For now, let's work out whether aquaponics is something you'd like to know more about.

What You'll Hear

Five short conversations. Five different parts of aquaponics. No homework required.

01 — So… What Actually Is Aquaponics?

We'll start at the beginning.

You'll discover how fish, plants and beneficial bacteria work together, how aquaponics differs from growing in soil, and why you don't need a huge backyard to get started.

02 — Is Aquaponics Going to Take Over My Life?

How much work does an aquaponics system actually take?

We'll talk about everyday maintenance, water testing, running costs, feeding your fish and why looking after a system doesn't need to become another full-time job.

03 — What Can I Actually Grow — and Will It Feed Me?

Let's talk food.

We'll look at vegetables and herbs that can work well in aquaponics, why some plants make more sense than others, how many plants your system can support and how staggered planting can help keep food growing throughout the year.

04 — Can the Kids Help? And What If I Can't Build Things?

Aquaponics can be an incredible living classroom for children — but what if you're looking at the pipes and tools thinking, there is absolutely no way I can build that?

We'll talk about both.

05 — Is Aquaponics Actually Worth It?

Finally, we'll bring it back to everyday life.

Convenience. Growing food at home. Costs. Knowing where your food comes from. Small spaces. Food security.

And one of the most important beginner questions of all:

What happens if I get stuck?

Learn While You're Already Doing Something Else

You don't need to find an hour.

You don't need to sit in front of a screen.

And you definitely don't need a notebook beside you.

Each audio is designed to give you one small piece of the aquaponics picture at a time.

Put one on while you're driving.

Listen while you're folding washing or making dinner.

Take me into the garden with you.

Or listen to the whole series when you've got a little more time.

You don't need to remember every detail.

The idea is simply to help aquaponics start making sense.

This Isn't an Aquaponics Course

And I'm not going to try to turn you into an aquaponics expert in five little audio recordings.

This series is for the beginning.

The curious stage.

The “I've heard about this aquaponics thing and I'm wondering if it could actually work for me” stage.

I've been involved with aquaponics for many years, and one of the biggest things I've learned is that understanding why something works makes learning how to do it so much easier.

So that's where we'll start.

No assumption that you already know the terminology.

No expectation that you're confident with tools.

No enormous system required.

Just the fundamentals, explained conversationally, one question at a time.
