About Aquaponics

Imagine the Dream...

Have you ever imagined having a self-sustaining garden that not only grows fresh, organic veggies but also houses your pet fish? This is aquaponics – a beautiful harmonious relationship between aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil) ~ in your own backyard.

It pains me to say, that first aquaponics system totally tanked. Nothing lived. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I followed the books and videos, but there was so much not there.

With my passion for the environment and animal welfare, I saw an amazing opportunity for the world, if only they knew about it.

That is when I made the best decision of my life. When we next moved (interstate) I changed careers (security) and studied aquaculture. I didn’t want what happened to me, to happen to others. Pardon the pun, but I was hooked!

I could see aquaponics as a way to bring communities together and make sure that everyone had access to healthy nutritious food. Aquaponics, was a way of being able to put a stop to the rivers and oceans being stripped of fish, enable people to grow healthy, chemical-free vegetables where they had low quality and degraded soil as well as water restrictions.

Aquaponics was a win-win for people and the environment.

As I build, and re-built the aquaponics systems, I felt like I was re-building myself. I worked through my PTSD and depression. I transformed, and the more I connected to the ecosystem of aquaponics, the more connected I was with myself.

Aquaponics is the logical step to make when people have limited garden space, water restrictions, are renting, don’t have time to spend cultivating the soil, and run busy lives and hectic family schedules.

I believe in empowering families to be self-sufficient in any and all ways possible, including composting, worm farms, and wicker beds.

I am a bit unconventional as I engage with playfulness and simplicity that it is easy for people of all ages to understand, and also enjoy as they learn to live healthily. I’ve often been told that my passion is contagious, and that I “make it easy for you to learn what you need to know”.

“You don’t know what you don’t know”, I’m living proof that aquaponics is a learned skill. The biggest issue today, is people don’t know that they don’t know something. That and they over complicate things. I’m all for keeping things simple.

“People are interested and want to learn, but they don’t know where to start and they don’t know what questions to ask to find their way”. This is why I created free training to help people on their journey, so they have some basics to understand what they don’t know, and learn where to go from here.

What is Aquaponics, Simply Put??

Aquaponics is replicating nature's perfect cycle, where fish waste provides fertiliser for plants, and in turn, plants filter the water for the fish. It's a closed-loop system where both aquatic creatures and plants thrive in balanced harmony.

You can create your own aquaponics system to any size from indoor to courtyard, to urban living through to larger systems in more space. A perfect, sustainable form of gardening, anywhere.

How Does Aquaponics Work?

Picture this: You have a tank filled with awesome fishies. These fish produce liquid waste, which is rich in ammonia. Instead of letting this waste accumulate, it's pumped into a filter where beneficial bacteria convert it into nitrates – a form of fertiliser plants love. The plants absorb these nutrients, filtering the water, which is then returned to the fish tank. It's a beautiful cycle of life!

You have a fish tank, a filter and a veggie growing area. Boom, growing healthy food at home, with aquaponics.

How Can Urban Aquaponics Work For You?

  • Perfect for urban families with limited space. Aquaponics systems can fit right in your backyard, courtyard or even on your balcony.

  • Perfect if you are renting and want to have healthy food, and you can take it with you!

  • Great if you live in places where there is only cement or rocky areas and you cannot grow much.

  • Save money in your back-pocket. Say goodbye to pricey supermarket veggies. With aquaponics, you can grow your own organic produce at a fraction of the cost.

  • By investing in your health now, you save on doctors bills and illness in the future.

  • A great activity to get the kids involved with, learning how to grow food, save money and be more independent.

  • Enjoy fresh, chemical-free vegetables straight from your garden. It doesn't get any healthier than that.
