Constant Flow vs. Flood & Drain
Constant Flow vs. Flood & Drain: Choosing the Best Method for Your Aquaponics Growbed
When setting up an aquaponics system, one of the key decisions you'll make is choosing between two common methods for your growbed: constant flow and flood & drain (also known as ebb & flow).
Both methods have their advantages and can work well, depending on the type of veggies you want to grow and how you want your system to operate.
Let’s dive into the details of each method to help you make an informed decision.
Constant Flow: Simplicity and Consistency
What is Constant Flow?
In a constant flow system, the water level in the growbed remains at a consistent height with no fluctuations. You set the water level using a standpipe at the desired height, and the water stays at this level continuously.
This method is straightforward and easy to manage.
Advantages of Constant Flow
Ease of Setup: Constant flow systems are the easiest to set up and maintain.
Ideal for Small Systems: They are perfect for small aquaponics systems where there is no sump to balance the water levels.
Plant Compatibility: Most plants thrive in this system, except for root crops, which prefer drier conditions.
Considerations for Constant Flow
One common concern with constant flow systems is root rot, which occurs if there isn’t enough oxygen in the water.
However, with proper aeration, this issue can be managed effectively.
Over my 15 years of using constant flow systems, I have had no issues with root rot, provided that the water is well-aerated.
Flood & Drain (Ebb & Flow): Dynamic and Efficient
What is Flood & Drain?
Flood & drain systems involve allowing the growbed to fill with water (flood) and then drain out completely. This is typically achieved using a bell siphon attached to the standpipe plumbing.
When the siphon is activated, the water drains from the growbed into a sump or back into the fish tank.
Getting a siphon to work requires understanding of the water flow balance. Too much, or too little water will impact how this functions.
Advantages of Flood & Drain
Root Crop Friendly: This method is perfect for growing root crops, as the alternating wet and dry conditions prevent root rot and encourage healthy root development.
Natural Aeration: The draining process naturally aerates the water, reducing the need for additional aeration equipment.
Efficient Water Use: This system can be very efficient in water use, ensuring plants get adequate water without being waterlogged.
Considerations for Flood & Drain
Complexity: Setting up and maintaining a bell siphon (or any siphon) can be tricky and requires some initial effort and understanding.
System Size: In small systems without a sump, the water level in the fish tank will drop when the growbed floods, reducing the space available for fish. This needs to be managed carefully.

Making the Right Choice for Your System
Choosing between constant flow and flood & drain largely depends on the specific needs of your aquaponics setup and the types of plants you want to grow. Here are some pointers to help you decide:
Constant Flow: Choose this method for ease of setup, maintenance, and growing non-root crops in small systems without a sump.
Flood & Drain: Opt for this method if you are growing root crops, want natural aeration, and are comfortable with the initial setup complexity.
Conclusion
Both constant flow and flood & drain systems have their unique benefits and can be effective for different aquaponics setups.
Experimenting with both methods might give you the best insights into what works best for your specific needs.
